What is a Registered User?

Registered Users of the SMi Online web site get unrestricted access to all areas of the site - visitors who do not register to become a Registered User do not have access to the most valuable information contained in the site.

How do I become a Registered User?

Becoming a Registered User is easy, just fill in a simple registration form - it won't take you more than a couple of minutes.

What are the benefits?

Apart from having unrestricted access, Registered Users enjoy the benefit of a 'Virtual Briefcase', having forms automatically completed for them, being regularly informed of updates to SMi Online and in the near future will be able to personalise their visits and experience of SMi Online to suit their stated interests.

What is the 'Automatic Log-In' feature?

The automatic log-in feature is available for registered users and removes the need to log-in every time you visit the site as this will be performed automatically upon arrival at the site.

How is this done?

When you select the auto-login feature a cookie will be stored on your computer. The cookie contains a unique reference number that identifies your computer to our web server and allows us to log you in automatically.

You should only use this feature if you do not share your computer with others. If you use this feature on a shared computer then it may be possible for others to gain access to your personal contact information.

What are 'cookies' and how are they used in the site?

Cookies are used throughout the SMi online site to enhance your visit - if you do not enable cookies in your browser you will not be able to log-in or gain access to restricted areas of the site.

What are cookies?

Cookies are simply a method of identifying the computer you are using to the SMi Online web server. Normally when you connect to a web server to a get a web page you connect anonymously, download the page and then disconnect from the web server - so if you return to the server to get another page the web server has no way of knowing that you have visited previously. A 'cookie' is just a small piece of additional data that is downloaded to your computer when you visit a page, when you visit another page the cookie is passed back to the server by your browser. The server will use the returned cookie to perform certain processes, such as allowing access to restricted areas/facilities, auto-completing forms and so on.

SMi Online use cookies to identify Registered Users - when you log-in a a cookie is downloaded to your system that identifies you as a Registered User so whenever you visit the site the web server knows that you have access to all areas of the site and can auto-complete certain forms for you.

What information is stored in the cookies?

SMi do not store any of your personal information in cookies. The only information stored in the cookie is a 30 digit randomly generated string of digits (automatically created by the web server) which is used as a means of identifying you to the server. Unless you specify otherwise in you 'User Preferences', the cookie will be deleted by your web browser upon leaving the site.

What security is used in the site?

SMi Online uses a secure communication protocol (Secure Socket Layers, or 'SSL') to transmit any sensitive data. Thus, when you make an online credit card transaction you can be sure that your credit card details are transmitted securely.

If you have an older browser that does not support SSL or will not except our current certificate you may place your order via non-secure communications. If you choose this option we strongly recommend that you do not choose to pay by credit card.

How to use your Virtual Briefcase.

A 'Virtual Briefcase' will be created for you when you become a Registered User. Your briefcase contains a record of your personal contact information and is used as a temporary holding place for items that you wish to purchase from the site, events that you wish to register to attend and product information that you have requested.

The Contents Page lets you view, process or remove the items currently held in your briefcase.

The Personal Info Page lets you view and amend the contact information that we have on record for you.

The circular icons in the top right are a 'Back' button, a 'Refresh' button, a 'Help' button and a 'Close/Exit' button respectively.

We have plans to introduce a 'History' page that will allow you to view your transaction history - to print off order forms, for your accounts and so you can 'undo' any items accidentally removed.

We also have plans to introduce a 'Registered User Survey' that will allow us to tailor content to match your stated interests, and allow you to personalise your visits and experience of the site.
